Key Data/ Statistical Info
  • Uber’s London licence expires on 30 September, although it will continue to run taxis while it pursues a legal appeal process that could last a year.
  • Uber is attempting to overturn a landmark ruling that its drivers are workers, with rights to paid holiday and the minimum wage.
  • TfL said last week Uber was not a “fit and proper” private car-hire operator and cited four areas of concern, including its approach to reporting criminal offences and carrying out background checks on drivers.
The article is about how Uber lost its licence to operate in London and how the CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi apologies for the mistakes the company has made. According to TfL, Uber was not a ''fit and proper'' car hire operator as they sparked some concerns, that be a threat to the safety of passengers. The article mentions that ''Uber does not report criminal offenses directly to the police''- which has led to one incident involving an Uber driver who ''sexually assaulted a passenger'' and ''went on to commit another, more serious attack. Overall, Uber's chief executive apologized for the mistakes made by the company whilst fighting for the renewal of their license in the city.

I believe that it was a fair decision made by Sadiq Khan, as companies like Uber, that are only existent on an online platform, should not take advantage of their position. In my opinion, it seems as if Uber thought that the rules that apply to other taxi services, such as black cabs (that you can hire both in person and online), do not apply to them. Its almost as if they were trying to dodge the gatekeepers, in this case TfL, and not following safety measures designed to keep passengers safe. Furthermore, as a business that has ''40,000 drivers in London'', the debates over the ''minimum wage'' and the ''rights to a paid holiday'', should be irrefutable.
